Congratulations to Rachel Gryzb and Roy Abarca for being our Oilers of the Week for last week. Teachers vote for Oilers of the Week by choosing which of their students exemplified each of Whiting High School's five core values (Self-Discipline, Responsibility, Self-Advocacy, GRIT, and Growth Mindset). Below is what teachers had to say about Rachel and Roy.
Rachel shows grit by her willingness to work hard to achieve her goals. She challenges herself in AP and honor level classes all the while achieving honor roll status. She exhibits a growth mindset through embracing challenges and working through them. Rachel advocates for herself by acknowledging her weaknesses and asking for assistance when needed. Her discipline and responsibility can be seen through her commitment to following the expectations inside and outside the classroom. This has allowed Rachel to become one of the top students in her class and is recognized as such being a member of the NHS.
Roy has worked extremely hard catching up on missed work lately. He will ask for extra examples and then will try to clarify using his own words when needed. He self-advocates by asking for help when he needs it.
