Congratulations to Lily Morando for being our Oiler of the Week last week. Teachers vote for Oilers of the Week by choosing which of their students exemplified each of Whiting High School's five core values (Self-Discipline, Responsibility, Self-Advocacy, GRIT, and Growth Mindset). Below is what teachers had to say about Lily.
Self-Discipline: Lily all year has taken the initiative to fight away any distracting temptations and focus on everything we were doing in the classroom. She actively participates in discussion, assignments, and other classroom activities acting as a leader for other students to follow.
Responsibility: Lily has 0 missing assignments, and that is the total for the entire year I have had her as a student. She remains on top of her studies in my class even with all of the extracurricular activities she had participated in as the year went on.
Self-advocacy: Lily is a leader. She holds herself to this standard when she participates in class activities. She never hesitates to ask questions to make sure her and her group know exactly what is expected of them. She takes this role seriously and is always eager to help the people around her to succeed.
Grit: Lily has one of the strongest mindsets of any student I have taught. She knows who she is, she knows what she wants, and she doesn't let anything get in the way of her and her goals.
Growth Mindset: Throughout the year I have taught Lily, I have seen an exponential amount of growth. She is consistently finding ways to grow in her academics and athletics, but in the process, she is growing as an individual. She started as a student in my class who minded her own business and got her work done. Now, she is an active participant and a leader amongst her classmates.
Lily could have won Oiler of the Week many times this year for my class. But I believe in the "save the best for last" statement as I can truly share the impact she has had in my class for the entire year. Lily is one of those students that makes teaching easier, a student who truly brings joy to a stressful career. I am very proud of the Lily has become and I am eager to see what she does throughout the remainder of her high school career.
